After two weeks of play, the 2007 French Open comes to a close tonight. Whoever it is that's gonna win the trophy this year doesn't really matter since I've already picked out my winner between the two finalists.
The fact alone that he's practically the only one that can defeat the seemingly unbeatable world number one, Roger Federer, makes him hot stuff. He's also the record holder for the longest winning streak on a single surface (clay, of all surfaces for Pete's sake!) with 81 wins. And that he was only 20 at the time he achieved this is really something. The kid only turned 21 last Sunday but his accolades is already of legend status--personally, his ability to outplay Federer on clay being THE highpoint. And the fact that he's a huge Real Madrid supporter is not to be forgotten. I just hope though that he doesn't get too tied to his ability to being a dominant player on just one surface and work to master all of them. He did manage to reach the finals of Wimbledon last year, only to be defeated by who-else-but-the-world-number-one-again, but there's no other way than up after that. I think he'd be the only player in the tour right now who can hoist that French Open trophy then the Wimbledon trophy...and maybe, the US Open trophy...and then the Aussie Open after that...in those crazy capri pants--and almost convince us that they look good!
So will he make it for the third straight year in Roland Garros tonight? Let's just hope so because I'm not the biggest fan of the alternative. Vamos, Rafa!
